La mostra She affects us, indeed, presso l’Istituto Svedese di Studi Classici a Roma, si configura come un dialogo tra Sophie Westerlind (Stoccolma, 1985) e Giulio Squillacciotti (Roma, 1982). A partire dalle riflessioni di What Has Left Since We Left – il film in cui Squillacciotti immagina la fine dell’Unione Europea come fosse una seduta psicoterapica tra capi di stato – Westerlind costruisce un corpus pittorico che, a partire da fotografie inedite e d’archivio, ritrae soggetti dislocati nei luoghi che l’artista ha frequentato e vissuto durante gli ultimi dieci anni. Il risultato è una geografia fatti di affetti e ricordi, che suggerisce una riflessione sul ruolo politico e identitario dell’Europa contemporanea.

The exhibition She affects us, indeed at the Swedish Institute for Classical Studies in Rome takes the form of a dialogue between Sophie Westerlind (Stockholm, 1985) and Giulio Squillacciotti (Rome, 1982). Starting from the reflections of What Has Left Since We Left – the film in which Squillacciotti imagines the end of the European Union as if it were a psychotherapy session between heads of state – Westerlind builds a corpus of paintings, based on unpublished and archival photographs, portraying subjects located in the places the artist has visited and lived in over the past ten years. The result is a geography of affection and memory that suggests a reflection on the role of politics and identity in contemporary Europe.
